Token Wheels

“Token is a name most people won’t instantly recognise as a wheel manufacturer, but that should be about to change. For the 2013 models they have completely overhauled the entire range from low-end clinchers to top-end tubular and have all new designs to re-evaluate the way people think about Token wheels.”

– New Zealand Biking Magazine : Feb 2013

Token Wheelset Technology

At the Token Booth this year the focus is on our wheelset technology. The central part of the booth this year is a stand split up into different sections show the various parts that go towards building up our wheelsets. Take a closer look below and find out why Token is re-evaluating the way people think about our wheels.

5ww (Large)Using a high-tech material normally found in aerospace and military applications, Token is bringing a whole new riding experience to the cycling world. When this technologically advanced material is combined with our carbon wheels the result is a super high tensile strength wheel which significantly reduces vibration. We simply call it, Anti-Vibration Technology! Or AVT because it’s just easier and takes less time to say.

Weight for weight, AVT is eight times stronger than steel, resistant to high temperatures, fatigue, impact and the corrosion from chemicals or saltwater.

AVT is truly an INNOAVTIVE advance in wheel technology and the very best that we have to offer riders.

It’s almost as if it came from another planet……

AiNeon Brake Rotor

AiNeon (Large)

Designed and built by Ashima, AiNeon is a two-piece brake rotor comprised of a stainless steel outer ring attached to a central coloured aluminium spider. Aluminium has a much higher heat conduction rate, so high temperatures during braking dissipate quickly and efficiently across the rotor. At a mere 72 grams, this is one of the lightest two-piece rotors on the market. Token have partnered with Ashima to create a dedicated hub for their AiNeon rotor.

AiNeon is one of the first dedicated commercial brake systems to offer 3 rotor bolts as standard. Many semi and pro-riders have been using 3 bolts for a while now to save on weight, so there’s nothing new or alarming about that. Many MTB traditionalists will argue about the compromise in strength, but in testing the AiNeon rotor the results show that this is just not the case. The hub and rotor are also offered with the traditional 6 bolt system for those still not convinced.

The AiNeon rotor was tested with a braking force of 700N and repeated 1,000 times. No failures were discovered.

(EN testing normally requires 425N max.)

Arsenal Hub

Arsenal Hub“Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men.”

– George S. Patton

You’ve done your training, you’re mentally ready, you’re confident about winning that race. You’ve even kissed your mother on the cheek and told her you’ll write soon. You have everything you need before going off to war. Except one thing….. Your weapons of choice, your artillery, your ‘Arsenal.’

Ok, so you’re not out to kill anyone, it is cycling after all! However, having the right tools to get the job done and win your own racing battles is important. Token’s Arsenal hub uses weapons grade manufacturing processes to ensure you get an absolute precision engineered product.

The Arsenal hub is probably the lightest hub in its class. Made from alloy, it’s as strong as a missile casing. In your hand it feels solid like a grenade. The ratchet ring is comprised of 2 sections containing 24 teeth, so you get 48 engagements per cycle. This means you’ll get instant grip and power like a tank.

We equipped the Arsenal hub with our signature TBT Tiramic Bearings giving you lots of ‘free speed.’ Finally, the Arsenal rear hub is finished with a 2:1 two-to-one spoke ratio providing optimized power transfer by balancing and increasing the spoke tension of the wheel.

With this kind of setup you’ll find yourself steaming onward like an armoured vehicle.

But let’s get real for a minute and get back to what George S. Patton said. Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. We can’t help you prepare physically and mentally for taking on the enemy. However, we have the best ‘Arsenal’ for cycling that your money can buy.

Make this hub part of your cycling war today and watch your enemies shake in their boots!

TBT Bearings

TBT Bearings

“It never gets easier, you just go faster.”

– Greg LeMond.

Greg was right about it never getting easier. What if it could though? What if you could get some ‘free speed’ when pedalling? Well, we did the following complicated mathematical equation and eureka! TBT Bearings were born. Well done Token secret scientists!

Titanium + Ceramic = Tiramic

Token’s Tiramic Bearing Technology delivers outstanding performance. Titanium coated ceramic balls are 60% lighter than steel and are extremely durable, smoother and accelerate faster than their steel counterparts. That’s because the starting torque of Tiramic Bearings is only 74% of normal bearings making pedalling much lighter. The turning torque of Tiramic Bearings is only 67% of normal bearings, so you get a much smoother ride. Both of these factors result in significantly less chain drag during your ride. Pick up a tube of our specially designed Tiramic Bearing grease which increases resistance to mechanical and chemical corrosion and you’ll be greasing your way confidently to the front of the pack.

With TBT Bearings you’ll find pedalling less strenuous, and you’ll definitely be moving faster.

Free Wheel Body / Cassette

Free Wheel Body

It is often asked, “What’s all this 3 and 6 pawl free wheel body nonsense I keep hearing?” Well, allow us to explain. Imagine it like this – You’re snoozing away on Sunday morning and you’re having one of those slightly odd, yet hateful dreams about food where you find yourself at the kitchen table. Your absolute favourite sandwich in the whole world is sitting right in front of you just waiting for the taking. You pick it up with two hands and take that first mouth-watering bite. You suddenly realize two things. The odd and startling part of the dream is that you are missing some teeth which is going to cause some problems chewing this delicious morsel. The second and most disappointing thing is that on attempting to bite the sandwich you can’t taste it because it’s just a dream and you wake up with a mouth full of pillow and a rumbling belly.

Ever had one of those dreams? Maybe not…..

So, what’s the point? Well, the first is that if you only had a few teeth you wouldn’t get much grip on that sandwich. The second is that saliva on your pillow is a hindrance to any further snoozing.

So, with more teeth, you can bite down better and get the job done, right? The pawls in a free wheel body can be seen as teeth that bite down to get you moving. The more teeth, the better the performance when you chomp down on the pedals during acceleration.

Inside Token’s free wheel body for road bikes, you’ll discover 6 pawls split into 2 sections. This means you get a faster, more responsive engagement as you pedal. Those hungry for victory will be chewing up road and gnashing at their opponents cleats in no time.

For our MTB free wheel body it is the strength of the bite that counts, so you’ll find 6 pawls in 1 section giving riders double the strength. MTB enthusiasts will be chewing up the dirt and swallowing up trails quicker than you can get that pillow out of your mouth.

Spokes (Large)

As light as a Titanium spoke!

At Token we have chosen to equip the majority of our wheelsets with Sapim’s CX-RAY Aero Bladed Spokes. CX-RAY still receives the best results in fatigue testing of any spoke. Its unique strength and flexibility make the CX-RAY suitable for most bicycle disciplines. The middle section of the spoke is drawn and then pressed in a special mold to form its specific profile. CX-RAY spokes are used by top bike racers and triathletes around the world. Even downhillers use them, recognizing their strength and flexibility. Special alloy treatment and sophisticated production make this all possible. The CX RAY fits all standard hub holes.

  • No more extra hub hole design; the hub manufacturer’s guarantee is unaffected.
  • Almost as light as Titanium.
  • Much longer lasting than any other spokes on the market. Extremely high fatigue test results.
  • Special alloy treatment and sophisticated production.
  • The best aerodynamic spokes available.
  • Produced from high-tensile, fatigue-resistant 18/8 stainless steel conforming to Sapim quality standard specifications.
  • Available from 182 mm to 310 mm in even lengths.

Shark Tail Skewers

Shark Tail Skewers 2

“Everything is designed. Few things are designed well.”

– Brian Reed

The tail of a shark provides thrust, delivering awesome speed and acceleration while the contoured shape allows the shark to glide through the water with ease and finesse.

The design of Token’s multi-award winning Shark Tail skewers was born out of the close observation of one of nature’s most powerful ocean bound creatures. By applying the shape and contours of a shark’s tail we created the strongest, lightest and most aerodynamic skewers you will find anywhere.

Shark Tail skewers are constructed using a stainless steel axle or Token’s signature titanium Y-cut axle, so you get the ultimate in lightness without compromising on strength. The streamlined alloy lever makes it easy to hook your fingers around for faster removal while the sleek aerodynamic design glides through the air effortlessly.

Available in metallic red, gold, black or blue, they are according to one review, a ‘fin-tastic’ addition to your bike!

Rim Tape

Rim Tape (Large)

Token’s rim tape is constructed from Terylene and PVC, so you get a strong, but lightweight material to protect your tyres from those naughty spokes that are so often the cause of punctures and eternal headaches for those riding tubulars.

Our rim tape forms a perfect seal between rim and tyre and is built to withstand pressures of up to 15 bar/235 psi. Of course, inflating your tyres to those kinds of pressures you’re more likely to see exploded pieces of tyre rubber all over your cycling jersey. On a serious note, you can rest assure that pressure changes are not going to be any problem when you have this rim tape strapped on.

Whatever area of cycling you are competing in, be it Road or Mountain, Token’s rim tape can take all the pressure punishment you throw at it from braking, jumping over rocks or bolting down a hill like a loose boulder.

Weighing in at 46g for a pair, if you wanted lighter you’d have to fill your tyres with helium.

I bought a set of Token wheels Bike pure ones and I’ve used them three times, and the free hub is wrecked this is not good as the wheels cost me £600 pound and now I’m stuck with nothing as I sold my last wheels that were Mavic and never give me any trouble
